When I began CM in 2018, in response to requests to describe my extensive climate engagement while in Germany, I first thought it would just run for a few issues; then, as it looked more permanent, I thought we’d move beyond a PDF inside a year. How wrong I was! Six years, 150 issues, and 5000 readers later, I’ve explored many platforms, subscribed to some, and paid IT Techs to help, before landing on Substack.
Here for fun is Climate Matters issue 1. Next time we’ll get into new content.
For those who don’t know me, well over a decade ago, after a fulfilling career in architecture, cost management, and professional education, I pivoted my business to focus on “multiplier effects” to help tackle the escalating climate crisis.
Since 2013 I’ve worked full time plus on climate issues of all sorts. I “specialise in being a generalist”, joining the dots between the science and technology of climate and then explaining what I find to those who want, or need, to engage with it.
My work ranges from research projects to policy input to carbon calculation tools. And also to education in many forms, including presentations, workshops, and writing - articles, reports and, of course, Climate Matters. (More at www.resilienz.co.nz and www.clearcut.nz).
So what might you expect from the new format?
TBH I’m not 100% certain because I’m still learning! It should arrive more smoothly in your inbox, be much better for those who like to read on their mobile, and be visually less condensed – which I know will please some readers.
But, with my heart in my mouth, I’m stepping away from the “always only one page” format! Not totally, as each CM will land like a single webpage, but rather than reduce content to land you on one visual “page” it will now take a little scrolling to read it all. Grumpy scrollers please forgive me!
And on the wish list for when it’s running smoothly are fortnightly single-topic longer format pieces, and maybe a forum.
I’m committed to CM remaining free and fortnightly (approximately), and there’s no charge for subscribers. BUT there’s a cool and quirky donation option for those who wish to acknowledge CM: all donations will go directly to the wonderful Nelson Tasman Climate Forum, with the double whammy of helping NTCF and making your donation tax-deductible. Yay!
